The British gambling industry agreed on new restrictions on gambling promos. Children football shirts –replicating those wore by famous players- radio and TV broadcasted advertisements will be the most affected. The restrictions are aimed to protect children.
Children shirts will not include logos or any branding that is gambling related. The decision is not beneficial for Tottenham Hotspur, Aston Villa, Middlesbrough, Blackburn or Sunderland; all of which have signed shirt-sponsorship lucrative deals with online gambling companies.
Radio and TV advertising will only be allowed after 9pm. It will include warning signs of social responsibility, same as what is usually seen in alcohol advertising. Sport-betting, lottery and bingo advertising during broadcast sporting events will be exempted, given that the income helps support minority sports.
Decisions were made during a meeting with James Purnell, the new Culture, Media and Sports Secretary. The new gambling law allows the Secretary of State to limit advertising. Purnell said he would take action if gambling companies do not adapt to the new rules.
